Redefining the drug discovery landscape

Well-being is a major, global issue, and the maintenance of good health has always been a key aim of medicine and science. In recent years, untold pioneering discoveries have made it possible to consider completely new therapeutic approaches. Consequently, the search for new drugs and therapies has become the key task of life scientists and pharmaceutical researchers.

Electrogenic membrane proteins such as ion channels, transporters, and ion pumps, are of major importance to the human organism with respect to signal transduction and metabolism. They therefore form the most-promising targets for future pharmacological developments.

IonGate Biosciences GmbH is a technology provider in the field of academic and preclinical pharmaceutical drug research, specializing in membrane proteins. Besides development of innovative technologies, IonGate offers a range of services in areas such as: assay development; target characterization; and compound testing.

Examples such as the HK-ATPase of the gastric mucosa (proton pump) illustrate how drug development with transporters can bring about extremely successful pharmaceutical products. Transporters are –
in contrast to ion channels – more difficult to handle experimentally, due to their lower transport rate.
For this reason, they have been largely neglected within pharmaceutical research projects.

SURFE²R™ Technology, developed by IonGate, significantly improves drug research with these targets.
The technology is based on a biosensor and enables direct monitoring of the electrogenic activity by measuring currents generated in the transport process.

The technology has successfully been applied for the characterization of transporters, ion pumps and channels, in basic research. It has subsequently been extended into an automated and parallel, high-throughput, screening technology. By providing the required technology, hardware, software and reagent components, as well as assay development and CRO services, IonGate thus provides a full-package solution for its customers.
